Alfa Romeo Offers Us All a Glimpse of the Electric Future with Latest Concept

Alfa Romeo seeks to put itself back in the spotlight and in a big way with a headline concept absolutely perfect for the luxury lifestyle blogs the brand is targeting. That’s why the storied Italian carmaker hired designer Klaus Dahlenkamp to share their combined vision of what the future of the brand and automotive design will look like in the new, electric age. Called the Alfa Romeo EV Concept, Dahlenkamp has sculpted a silhouette from steel that is both futuristic and classic at the same time, speaking to the marque’s heritage as well as its bold plans for the future. While Alfa Romeo would be forgiven for something hewing more towards safe design in terms of execution, the Dahlenkamp EV Concept strays away from traditional concepts of what a sports car should be as well as its essential form.

Don’t worry, the quintessential swooping lines and elegant forms are all here yet they are underpinned by noticeable design choices that immediately break the rules. Appearing for all intents and purposes like a normal sports car, upon closer inspection, it is revealed that the new Alfa concept has no doors or even windows. The fact that this requires closer inspection is itself a testament to the cohesiveness of the design and innovative technology the car would employ in the real world. Surprisingly coy about how this would all work, theories about the doors have ranged from a hinged mechanism to a perhaps imperceptible door line that opens up into the interior.
Alfa Romeo isn’t the first company to present such a concept but the mystery surrounding how the EV Concept would actually work seems to be part of their overall marketing for the idea. As far as the lack of windows, there are other electric car concepts that show the same aesthetic in action. In those models, the function of traditional windows is performed by cameras and other recording devices that then display this information on the windshield area and on side windows. This creates a kind of cocoon and sheltered experience for the occupants and, with the elimination of glass windows, allows for all sorts of electronic wizardry in the interior cabin. We suspect that the Alfa Romeo EV Concept would use this kind of technology as well though the company is somewhat mum about details at this stage.
There’s also the possibility that the EV Concept not only points the way towards the brand’s future in electric vehicles but also its overall corporate direction in terms of design. From this perspective, details such as visible doors and a windshield aren’t as important as conveying the general design direction through curves and lines. Whatever the case, Alfa has certainly stirred the automotive world and beyond once again with a design that speaks to the imagination as well as the heart. Long a symbol of sports car greatness, it remains to be seen whether electric vehicles will provide the spark necessary to reignite the passion for a brand too often overlooked.
