Luxury Electrified G-Wagon

The Classic G-Wagon Updated for the Electric Future

There’s a clear distinction between the luxury cars of the electric era and the old gasoline-powered marquees of the past. Typically, we get cutting-edge, sleek styling for the former and a more staid rendition for the latter but that’s quickly changing, but not in quite the way you might think. In fact, it looks like some classic styles, such as the timeless Mercedes-Benz G-Class, are simply transitioning over to an electric platform rather than ditch their heritage in favor of chasing the latest thing. And it’s probably only the first of a wave of products remade for the electric niche while competing alongside offerings from Tesla as well as BMW and Mercedes’ own electric-only models.
Luxury living magazines have touted the benefits of electric cars for years now. In fact, most luxury lifestyle magazines were the first on the Tesla train and, before that, hyped Toyota’s Prius. But even though luxury lifestyle publications tend to be at the forefront of trends, after all, that’s the first step in knowing how to live luxury lifestyle, they aren’t always quick enough to appreciate old things done in a new way. That’s exactly what Mercedes is doing with their electrified G-Wagon, and it’s already one of the hottest things in the segment until the Tesla truck comes out.
Dubbed the EQG, the concept is as production-ready as they come and features light detailing to the classic fascia that denotes this is an electric car without looking like something out of a science fiction movie set. Some of the more interesting touches on the concept debuted by Mercedes include a Maybach trim level dual-tone paint scheme and a promise from MB engineers that the electric car will have four-wheel drive capabilities similar to the gasoline engine G-Class.
If those promises hold true, this could make the EQG one of the best offroad SUVs in the electric segment and beyond. Admittedly, the stakes are that high for Mercedes given the mark’s storied history and is known globally for its offroad capabilities. Sharing a naming scheme with electric S-Class and E-Class variants, consumers should probably expect the EQG to be equivalent in most respects to the classic model but with perhaps more screens and a larger emphasis on technology. Mercedes did not discuss the model’s range or really anything about the interior but, again, if the past is anything to use as a guide then we expect the EQG will be loaded to the gills with tech and likely have a segment-leading battery life.
