The Queensberry & Its King
A New Reign has Begun in DTLA Featuring Eliah Mountjoy
The downtown revival is swiftly progressing with what seems to be a new restaurant, bar, or retail space opening nearly weekly in an area that was a Los Angeles dead zone for years, particularly prior to the development of Staples Center, and then LA Live.
How does one stand out when new places are popping up all the time?
The Queensberry, the latest offering from the Circa 93 Group that opened this past June, does this in two ways: hiding, and setting a standard for excellence.
While the address for The Queensberry is 819 S. Flower Street, you may not find what you’re looking for using that knowledge alone. The entrance to this hidden gem is in the alleyway, marked by a simple pink Q, a keypad, and a buzzer. This secrecy reserves this treasure for those in the know. A limited small plates menu is available in its lounge, which serves as the point-of-entry into the establishment. The interior takes decor inspiration from members-only bars in London and the venue’s namesake, the Marquess of Queensberry John Graham Chambers, who is the creator of the rules of modern boxing, hence the portraits of boxers throughout the space. In the chic lounge, explore a craft and classic cocktail menu, or try an American whisky — there’s one from each state in the Union.
Social hours are between 5 pm-10 pm Wednesday through Saturday, where you can enjoy $5 beers, $10 wines, $3 off all signature cocktails, and their dining fare. There’s a range of bites that include Shishito Peppers, Beef Short Rib Taquitos, or the Queensberry Burger for those looking for something more substantial.
Limited seating reservations are also available via the Maître d’, Eliah Mountjoy, whose bartending journey starts in San Francisco in the early 2000s and makes its way to the Queensberry via Hollywood and Beverly Hills. After a decade and a half of classes, palate development, and even learning spirit production, Mountjoy is now in charge of ensuring a great experience for every client, and is eager to share his knowledge and enthusiasm.
While 10 pm marks the end of social hours, it could be just the beginning of a very fun night. The bar remains open until 2 am, and boasts a dance room with resident DJs on weekends and holidays, and features a light-up floor that dramatically enhances the energy and ambiance. In this room, be sure to try a draft cocktail from their list, created by Scott Cushman, which makes delicious drinks quickly available for thirsty patrons in a rush to return to dancing.
For an extra special experience, try taking your cocktail knowledge and palate to the next level with a cocktail class or spirit tasting. Classes are in session weekly on Thursdays, with Cushman and Mountjoy administering both knowledge and delectable libations. The Queensberry is also available for both private and semi-private events seven days per week. With Eliah Mountjoy in your corner, The Queensberry is the perfect setting for any great night.
