A Side of Fries… and Madness

A Side of Fries… and Madness

The fried food phenomenon has perhaps been this decade’s largest culinary trend, making the leap from state fairs to fancy restaurants. From fried desserts to fried hamburgers to fried fruits — nothing is too good to get fried. Enter the small niche restaurant, Fry Madness, where chef Shawn is taking french-fries to a whole new level. Located on Spring Street, between Fifth and Sixth Streets, the restaurant is fast becoming downtown Los Angeles’s most popular fry bar.

What can you do with simple French fries?

More than you could ever imagine, as 15 distinct French fry entrees and desserts can be found on the menu, along with a dozen sauces, each catering to a distinct taste mixed with familiar flavors. One of the most exotic flavors is the Caribbean-inspired Jerk Shrimp Fries, served with Jerk-spiced shrimp, Mango pico and house-made Caribbean Nectors.

Meanwhile, the opposite end of the world inspired the popular By The Slice Fries entrée that includes Italian Sausage and Shaved Pepperoni (obviously), Derby Sage Cheese and Chili-infused Pesto Sauce.

The hip red-and-black décor at Fry Madness gives the restaurant its nightlife flavor and the casual-cool ambiance brings out a sports bar vibe, making it a popular place for Los Angeles Dodgers’sfans during their annual playoff runs in October.

Sweet Potatoes for the Sweet Tooth

French fries for dessert? No, it is not the idea of a fourth-grade classroom, but a another unique dish at Fry Madness. All three French fry desserts are served with sweet potato fries, allowing for a new tasting experience compared to the entrées.

The most popular dessert item (and this writer’s favorite) are the Smores Fries, topped off with broken brownie pieces, torched marshmallow, and caramelized banana. You can also find Nutella Fries, which feature the popular chocolate hazelnut spread and is a favorite with European tourists because of Nutella’s popularity in their home countries.

If neither of those desserts tickle your taste buds, try the Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Fries — yet another item that you will not find anywhere else in Los Angeles.
